Why people are switching
An electric cylinder makes heat with an element, the same way a jug does. A hot water heat pump moves heat from the outside air into the water instead, which takes far less electricity for the same hot shower. For a Hamilton household that’s a meaningful cut in the power bill every month, and it suits houses that don’t have gas or want to come off it.

How we install one
We start with your house: how many people, how you use hot water, where the old cylinder sits and whether there’s an outdoor spot with airflow and a drain nearby. Then we quote the system that fits, usually a Rinnai, as either an integrated unit (cylinder and heat pump in one) or a split system with the cylinder inside and the heat pump outside. On the day we remove the old cylinder or gas unit, run the pipework and condensate drain, fit the valves and tempering, commission it and show you the controls. If you’re coming off gas, the disconnection and gas safety certificate are part of the job.

What happens when you get in touch
The same four steps on every job, so you know what's coming.
- 1
You get in touch
Call, or send the quote form with a few photos. We take the details and book a time to look at the job, or quote from the photos if they show enough.
- 2
Written quote, usually the same day
We send the quote the day you ask. For common jobs the pricing is ready, and we tell you if a repair will do instead of a replacement.
- 3
The job
Non-urgent jobs are usually done within a week. Water or gas is off for the minimum time, and you do not need to be home if we can get access.
- 4
Paperwork and tidy up
Gas work comes with a gas safety certificate, and consented work with the PS3, pressure test and as-laid drainage plans the council needs. Then we clean up and invoice.

Outdoor cylinder position on a block wall, a typical spot for a hot water heat pump
Hot water heat pumps: your questions
What's the difference between this and the heat pump on my wall?
A hot water heat pump heats the water in your cylinder, not the air in your room. It works the same way, pulling heat from the outside air, which is why it uses so much less power than an element.
How much will I save?
It depends on your household and your power plan, so we won't quote a number we can't stand behind. What we can say is that a heat pump moves heat rather than making it, so it heats the same water for a fraction of the electricity. We'll talk you through the comparison for your house.
Where does it go?
Outside, usually where the old cylinder's pipework already runs, or an integrated unit in the old cylinder's spot if there's airflow. It needs a bit of space around it and a drain for condensate. We check all that at the quote.
Is it noisy?
There's a fan, like a quiet air conditioning outdoor unit. Siting it away from bedrooms is part of the planning.
Which brand?
We recommend Rinnai hot water heat pumps because they're reliable and well supported in Hamilton. We're not tied to them and will fit what you prefer.
Can you convert from gas?
Yes. Coming off a gas Infinity or gas cylinder is common now. We disconnect the gas and certify it, and install the heat pump. There's a page on gas to heat pump conversions with the detail.
