What the conversion involves

Swapping gas hot water for a heat pump is two trades in one job: the gas disconnection and the new plumbing. Because our work is signed off by a certifying plumber and gasfitter, you deal with one business for the whole thing. We assess where the heat pump cylinder can sit, run the new pipework from where the Infinity or gas cylinder was, disconnect and cap the gas with a gas safety certificate, install and commission the heat pump, and take the old unit away. Most changeovers are done in a day.

Is it right for your house?

It usually makes sense if you’re paying for gas mainly to heat water, if your Infinity is nearing the end of its life anyway, or if you want gas out of the house. If you also run a gas hob or gas heating, we talk about whether coming off gas entirely stacks up, or whether a new Infinity is the better call. We’ll give you both prices and a straight opinion.

What happens when you get in touch

The same four steps on every job, so you know what's coming.

  1. 1

    You get in touch

Call, or send the quote form with a few photos. We take the details and book a time to look at the job, or quote from the photos if they show enough.

  2. 2

Written quote, usually the same day

We send the quote the day you ask. For common jobs the pricing is ready, and we tell you if a repair will do instead of a replacement.

  3. 3

    The job

Non-urgent jobs are usually done within a week. Water or gas is off for the minimum time, and you do not need to be home if we can get access.

  4. 4

    Paperwork and tidy up

Gas work comes with a gas safety certificate, and consented work with the PS3, pressure test and as-laid drainage plans the council needs. Then we clean up and invoice.

Gas to heat pump conversion: your questions

Why would I switch?

To stop paying for gas: the bottles or the connection charge, as well as the gas itself. A heat pump runs on power and uses far less of it than an electric element. It also suits people who want to remove gas from the house.

Can the heat pump go where the Infinity was?

Sometimes. An Infinity is a small wall unit, and a heat pump needs a cylinder, so it often goes nearby on the ground or in the old cylinder cupboard if the house had one. We work that out at the quote.

What happens to the gas?

We disconnect and cap it and issue the gas safety certificate. If you have bottles, you cancel them with your supplier. If you're on reticulated gas, you'll need to tell the retailer.

Will I run out of hot water?

A properly sized heat pump cylinder holds plenty for a household. We size it on how many people you have and how you use hot water, so you're not short on a winter morning.

How long does the changeover take?

Usually a day. You're without hot water for part of it.
