Repair first, replace when it needs it

Hot water repairs are the work we do most, and most of them don’t end in a new cylinder. A dripping relief valve, a tired element, a thermostat that’s given up or a tempering valve that’s stuck are all quick fixes. We come with the common parts on the van, find the fault, and quote the repair. If the tank itself has started leaking, or the unit is old enough that another repair doesn’t stack up, we tell you that too, and give you the replacement options with prices next to each other.

Electric, gas or heat pump: we do all three

Because our work is signed off by a certifying plumber and gasfitter, we can take on the whole hot water system, whatever fuels it. That means a like-for-like Rheem cylinder swap, a Rinnai Infinity fault, a conversion from a low-pressure header tank to mains pressure, or a move from gas or electric to a hot water heat pump. One call, one quote, one invoice, and the gas safety certificate or council paperwork included where it applies.

What a hot water job looks like

Send us a photo of the unit, its pipework and valves, and a wider shot of where it sits. For most cylinders and Rinnai units that’s enough for a written quote the same day. If we need to see it, the visit is free. Once you say go, we order the gear and book you in, usually within the week. On the day, the water is off for a few hours at most, you don’t need to be home if we have access, and the old unit leaves with us.

What happens when you get in touch

The same four steps on every job, so you know what's coming.

  1. 1

    You get in touch

Call, or send the quote form with a few photos. We take the details and book a time to look at the job, or quote from the photos if they show enough.

  2. 2

Written quote, usually the same day

We send the quote the day you ask. For common jobs the pricing is ready, and we tell you if a repair will do instead of a replacement.

  3. 3

    The job

Non-urgent jobs are usually done within a week. Water or gas is off for the minimum time, and you do not need to be home if we can get access.

  4. 4

    Paperwork and tidy up

Gas work comes with a gas safety certificate, and consented work with the PS3, pressure test and as-laid drainage plans the council needs. Then we clean up and invoice.

Hot water: your questions

My hot water has stopped. Is it the cylinder?

Not necessarily. On an electric cylinder it's often the element or thermostat, or a tripped breaker. On a Rinnai it's often a fault code or an ignition problem. We find the fault first and quote the fix, not a new unit.

How long does a cylinder last?

Most electric cylinders in Hamilton go 15 to 25 years. A leak from a valve can be fixed; a leak from the tank itself means it's done. If yours is in the Rototuna or Flagstaff houses built in the 2000s, it may be coming due.

Should I go mains pressure?

If you've got a low-pressure cylinder with a header tank and a weak shower, a mains-pressure cylinder is the single biggest upgrade you can make. We check your pipework first, because old pipes sometimes need attention before they'll take mains pressure.

Gas or heat pump?

Both are good. Gas continuous-flow (like a Rinnai Infinity) gives endless hot water and suits a house that already has gas. A hot water heat pump uses much less power than an electric element and suits a house without gas, or one wanting off it. We'll give you a price for whichever fits, and both if you're deciding.

Which brands do you use?

We recommend Rinnai for gas and for hot water heat pumps, and Rheem for electric cylinders, because they're well made and parts are easy to get in Hamilton. We're not tied to either and we'll fit what you prefer.

Do I need a building consent?

Replacing a cylinder like for like usually doesn't need one when a certifying plumber does the work. Where consent is needed, we handle the paperwork and the council inspections.
