When a cylinder is actually done

Hamilton’s electric cylinders usually last 15 to 25 years. The tell-tale sign that one has reached the end is water weeping from the tank itself, often from the bottom seam, rather than from a valve or a fitting. A valve drip is a repair. A tank leak, a cylinder that’s rusting through, or one that’s needed two or three repairs in as many years is a replacement.

If you’re not sure which you’ve got, send us a photo of the cylinder, the valves on top and the floor around it. We’ll tell you straight, and if it’s a repair that’s what we’ll quote.

Like for like, or the upgrade worth making

A like-for-like swap puts a new Rheem cylinder where the old one was, with new valves and connections, and gets your hot water back with the least fuss. If your house still has a low-pressure cylinder fed from a header tank, this is also the moment to go to mains pressure. The difference in the shower is the single biggest upgrade most Hamilton homes can make. We quote both so you can decide with the prices in front of you, and we’ll tell you if a hot water heat pump or a gas Infinity unit makes more sense for your house than another cylinder.

What happens when you get in touch

The same four steps on every job, so you know what's coming.

  1. 1

    You get in touch

Call, or send the quote form with a few photos. We take the details and book a time to look at the job, or quote from the photos if they show enough.

  2. 2

Written quote, usually the same day

We send the quote the day you ask. For common jobs the pricing is ready, and we tell you if a repair will do instead of a replacement.

  3. 3

    The job

Non-urgent jobs are usually done within a week. Water or gas is off for the minimum time, and you do not need to be home if we can get access.

  4. 4

    Paperwork and tidy up

Gas work comes with a gas safety certificate, and consented work with the PS3, pressure test and as-laid drainage plans the council needs. Then we clean up and invoice.

Hot water cylinder replacement: your questions

How do I know it needs replacing and not repairing?

If the water is coming from a valve, a fitting or the pipework, it's a repair. If it's coming from the tank itself, usually weeping from the base or the seams, the cylinder is done. Send us a photo and we'll tell you which.

What size do I need?

Most Hamilton homes run a 180 litre cylinder; bigger households go 250 or 300. We check what you've got, how many people are in the house and how you use hot water before we quote.

Low pressure or mains pressure?

If you have a header tank in the roof and a weak shower, mains pressure is the upgrade worth making. We check the pipework first, because some older pipes need work before they'll take it. We'll quote like for like and mains pressure side by side so you can choose.

How long is the water off?

A straight swap is a few hours. You don't need to be home as long as we can get to the cylinder.

Do you take the old one away?

Yes, the old cylinder and any packaging leave with us.

Is a building consent needed?

Not usually for a like-for-like replacement done by a certifying plumber. If you're changing the type or location in a way that needs consent, we handle the paperwork and inspections.
